International Women’s Day – Celebrate Being YOU

International Women’s Day – Celebrate Being YOU

Girl Scouts of Western Washington Troop #40382 wanted to explore and understand homelessness, and to help make a difference in the lives of women at the shelter.

When they found out about The Sophia Way, the girls wanted to jump in to learn and to help. They had a conversation with Dietra Clayton, Housing Case Manager who shared her perspectives on homelessness and placing women into housing. Dietra invited the girls to come to the Sophia’s Place Shelter for a tour and to spend time volunteering.

2018-04_Girl ScoutsOn Saturday, March 10, four Girl Scouts ages 9 through 11 and their moms spent the afternoon and evening at Sophia’s Place. They started their experience with Kavya Dharmarajan, Director of Donor Relations, who spoke to the girls about how The Sophia Way helps women on their journey from homelessness to housing, how they could help, and then gave them a tour of the shelter. They were impressed with the computers, supplies, kitchen, laundry and bathrooms – and the tidy, semi-private sleeping areas, equipped with comfortable beds, colorful quilts, and storage for personal items.

The Girl Scouts were then able to spend the afternoon with Dietra cleaning the shelter. They swept the floors, sanitized and wiped down tables, chairs, shelves, lockers, and doors, and added a sparkle of TLC. After they finished cleaning, they took a break to play some BINGO, and then helped to prepare dinner. They then waited anxiously to meet the women.

As the women began to arrive, the girls were excited to meet them and share laughter and smiles. They served dinner and joined the ladies to dine and talk. Later, they served a special dessert of Girl Scout Cookies and serenaded the ladies with a few of their favorite Girl Scout songs – Make New Friends, The Girl Scout Promise Song, and Taps.

The Girl Scouts left wanting to do more to help, so they are now working to coordinate a fundraiser. Stay tuned for updates once they have finalized plans!

Thank you to Dietra, Kavya and The Sophia Way team for hosting Girl Scout Troop #40382 and providing them with an invaluable learning experience and the opportunity to give back and share their time, energy and kindness with the wonderful women at The Sophia Way.
