Immediate Care & Resources

The Day Center has been a vital resource for women without homes who need a place that offers every day care and services.

In 2014, The Sophia Way took over the Day Center services at Sophia’s Place. Until then, the center, known as the Angeline’s Day Center, was managed by the YWCA in partnership with Bellevue First Congregational Church. The center was open for four hours and had services from Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. It offered shelter and rest with resources for basic everyday needs such as a shower and a place to do laundry.

Two years later, in January 2016, The Sophia Way extended the hours to 3 pm. That gave women two and a half hours more of shelter. There were tears of joy when women heard the news, especially as they could now stay warmer for longer periods in the cold winter months. “I am so pleased and feel relaxed. We have more time now, and all of us get a chance to use the washer and dryer.”

And, more was to come as a year later the day center opened on weekends too! The women now had a place of rest every day of the week. Apart from meals, showers, and laundry, the center also has partnerships with different service providers – mental health counselors, a monthly dental van, weekly appointments with a nurse, access to haircuts, and more. “We have a wonderful group of service providers that are regularly coming, and our ladies are starting to build strong relationships with them,” said a shelter staff.

The staff makes an effort to build community among the women and organizes activities on holidays and special days. The women enjoy bingo night, movies, and group activities such as yoga and vision board. This is their home for the hours they are there, and the staff makes every effort to care for them.
